Some former Members of Parliament (MPs) are living as paupers, a former legislator has revealed.

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Amenfi Central constituency, George Kofi Arthur said “we are like church rats after Parliament.”

He made the comment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme, Wednesday while making a case for the establishment of a pension scheme for former MPs.

Hon Arthur described as unfortunate the deprivation some former MPs live in despite “once sacrificing for the nation.”

As an immediate measure, the former Amenfi Central MP said most of the former MPs are launching a comeback to save their future.

“When you are out of Parliament, you lose all benefits including allowances to buy fuel into your V8 so the temptation to comeback is high,” he stressed.

Hon. Arthur added that though he is able to cater for his family, he regrets not doing a lot of investments with the little monies he got as an MP.
