The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema has been accused of frustrating a company interested in generating power from waste generated in the metropolis.

On Adom FM’s anti-corruption segment Fabewoso, Evils Owusu who is the local representative of the waste company said they were ready to invest $180 million in the project to generate 30MWh of energy from 600,000 tonnes of waste per year at Kpone in the Greater Accra region.
He revealed that the project dragged on from 2009 until they decided to move it to neighbouring Liberia, Mali and Burkina Faso.
Mr. Owusu who is the head of Tuba Turbine GmbH, the local engineering firm that was to undertake the project said the Tema MCE had vowed not to sign the contract if he is not given a 10 percent shares.

According to him, his financiers from Switzerland and London, have threatened to pull out of the project due to the ‘unnecessary’ delays.
“The total project cost is estimated at $157 million, using a debt financing structure with an estimated payback period of 10 years. This will be a win-win situation but I’m frustrated. The Tema MCE told me the waste is his commodity so my 157 million dollars is nothing without his waste”, he claimed.
Mr. Owusu alleged that, since his encounter with the Tema MCE, he has refused to sign the five page contract because “I failed to pay him the bribe”.
“I have resolved to move the project to Burkina Faso, Liberia and Mali where they are ready to work with us”, he added.

In a quick rebuttal, the Public Relations Officer for Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Frank Asante denied all the allegations.
He explained that they had an already existing contract so Mr. Anang-La wanted to do due diligence hence the delay.
This notwithstanding, Frank Asante said the MCE who is outside the country will set the record straight on his return.

  1. Instead of signing this contract for better standards for the community, you’re refusing because of your selfish interest. Another greedy bastard.

  2. I personally have a friend who experienced the same thing. The German government were going to fund the whole project but as usual the officials on this side wanted money (bribe). The Germans got upset and left and have not been back since. We really need to do better as a people and hold these officials accountable. We are falling behind as the rest of the world develops!!!!
