A 13-year-old boy, identified as Bright Acheampong, has been found dead after he reportedly fell in a galamsey stream on Tuesday at Konongo-Odumasi in the Ashanti region.
In an interview with Adom News, Ernest Acheampong, father of Bright revealed his wife called him to inform him about the unfortunate incident.
“My wife called me around 6:pm to inform me about the unfortunate incident so I had to rush to his school, but went to meet his lifeless body,” he recounted.
Bright’s 12-year-old friend, who was at the scene when the incident happened, said they went to the stream to bath after school, but Bright jumped into the stream immediately they got there.
“He jumped in and out of the stream twice, but did not come up again the third time even though we were waiting to see him out. The next thing we saw, he suddenly came up and we tried to rescue him but we couldn’t so we had to go and call for help while others stood by the stream to see if he will come out again, but he never did,” he narrated.
The Asante Akyem Central National Disaster Management Organisation Coordinator, Mr Jones Osei Asamoah, who spoke to Adom News reporter Isaac Amoako, confirmed that the stream was a galamsey pit.
“I will express my condolence to the family of Bright for the unfortunate incident, but will plead with the District Assembly, to as a matter of urgency, cover all the galamsey pits. There are about 50 of them in the area,” he noted.
