Some Ghanaian students who have completed their studies at the University of Memphis in the United States are reportedly unable to obtain their certificates and academic results due to outstanding fees owed by the government.
According to one of the affected beneficiaries, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the university has withheld certificates and results of some graduates until the outstanding tuition and accommodation fees are settled.
“Those who have finished, most of them have not gotten their certificates because the school has withheld them until they get their full payment,” the beneficiary said.
“The school has withheld their results until they pay.” he said in an interview on Adom FMs Dwaso Nsem morning show.
The students are beneficiaries of Ghana’s government scholarship programme and say the situation has left some graduates unable to complete the final processes required after their studies.
The development comes amid concerns over unpaid tuition and accommodation fees owed to the University of Memphis.
The affected students say they have repeatedly engaged the Scholarship Secretariat and other relevant authorities to resolve the matter, but have yet to receive a lasting solution.
The beneficiary said the problem has also created uncertainty for students who have completed their programmes and those still pursuing their studies.
The students fear that if the outstanding payments are not settled, the university could take further action against them.
They are therefore appealing to the government, the Scholarship Secretariat and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and ensure that the outstanding fees are paid.
They also want the government to help secure the release of the certificates and academic records of graduates who have completed their programmes.
