The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has suspended its nationwide strike following a series of engagements with government and other stakeholders, including the Council of State.
The Association has directed its members to resume normal duties on Monday, October 12, 2026, pending the fulfilment of commitments made during the negotiations.
In a statement, GNAT said more than 51,000 members who had been promoted would be placed on their appropriate salary scales, with full payment of arrears and their October salaries, by October 16, 2026.
It said the necessary inputs had been made and were awaiting validation.
On the ongoing negotiations for a collective agreement, GNAT disclosed that the parties had agreed to increase the Cost of Professional Allowance (CPA) to GH¢3,100, tax-free, with payment expected in December 2026.
The Complimentary Digital Support Allowance has also been increased to GH¢1,100, tax-free, and is expected to be paid by the end of November 2026.
The Association said negotiations on the collective agreement remained inconclusive, adding that a procedural document outlining how teachers could access the benefits would be finalised with the Ghana Education Service (GES) once the agreement document was completed.
GNAT further stated that an agreement had been reached in principle for budgetary provision to be made for the Deprived Area Allowance in the 2027 national budget, with payments expected to begin in January 2027.
According to the statement, payments would initially cover teachers serving in island communities and hinterlands, with coverage expected to expand over time.
The Association thanked its officers, executives, council members, staff and members for their solidarity and support throughout the industrial action.
It assured members of its continued commitment to addressing outstanding concerns and improving conditions within the teaching profession.
