Ten-man Manchester United slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening, with Leny Yoro shown a second-half red card on a disappointing night for Michael Carrick’s side.
Looking to bounce back after their draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, United suffered a horror start, conceding after just 53 seconds as Pablo Barrios finished off a flowing move from the hosts, with a sprawling Ayden Heaven not quite able to keep the ball from crossing the line.
United presented the home side with far too much space in midfield and were fortunate that Julian Alvarez was not at his sharp best on his first home start of the season.
But the tale of the game was the string of missed chances for both teams, with the woodwork struck on three occasions and United failing to convert a number of golden opportunities, and a combination of wasteful finishing and brilliant goalkeeping from Jan Oblak denying the visitors an equaliser.
Just as United looked to have the momentum fully behind them for a strong finish, Leny Yoro was adjudged on review to have fouled Jonathan David as the last man and was shown a 74th-minute red card, and with that the momentum dissipated.
David played a big part in the second goal that effectively wrapped up the game, controlling the ball on the edge of the box and forcing Senne Lammens into a fingertip save, with fellow substitute Ademola Lookman tucking home the rebound.
Both teams will go into matchday three with a win and a loss apiece, with United facing a trip to debutants Como coming up next week after a weekend trip across the Pennines to Leeds United.
