The Ministry of Transport says it has launched investigations into the alleged misuse of GH¢40 million released in 2024 for the rehabilitation of the Accra–Achimota–Nsawam railway line.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the issue was brought to the ministry’s attention by the Chief Executive of the Railway Development Authority, prompting immediate steps to determine what happened to the funds.
Speaking to journalists, the minister assured the public that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and that the findings will be made public once the process is completed.
“This came to my attention through the Chief Executive of the Railway Development Authority, and these were issues that occurred in 2024,” he said.
Mr Nikpe explained that concerns emerged after it was discovered that although GH¢40 million had been allocated for rehabilitation works on the railway line, the project was never executed.
“They raised concerns that in 2024, an amount of GH¢40 million was released for the rehabilitation of the Accra–Achimota–Nsawam railway line, but the work was not carried out, and the matter is currently under investigation,” he stated.
The minister noted that the ministry has already initiated investigations and is awaiting the outcome.
“It is already something the ministry is aware of, and we have taken steps to investigate it,” he said.
He added that the final report would establish whether the funds were misappropriated or if other factors contributed to the project not being undertaken.
“We are hoping that when the investigations are concluded, we will know the truth about the matter and understand what exactly happened to the funds,” the minister added.
