Three people sustained critical injuries after a fully-loaded trailer reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into eight vehicles at the Asokwa overpass in the Ashanti Region.

Eyewitnesses said the trailer was travelling from Anloga Junction towards Ahodwo Roundabout when it allegedly developed a brake fault, plowing into several vehicles that were caught in traffic along the same stretch.

The vehicles involved included a Toyota Santa Fe, Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla, Nissan SUV, KIA Morning, Toyota pickup, a Mitsubishi saloon car, and the trailer.

Driver of the Toyota Santa Fe, Kwame Mensah, said the trailer rammed into his vehicle and pushed it for about five metres before it came to a halt.

“All I saw was the trailer pushing my car. My vehicle then rammed into the one in front, which also hit another vehicle, creating a chain collision. Fortunately, a streetlight pole helped stop the trailer; otherwise, the situation could have been far worse,” he said.

Mr. Mensah said no fatalities were recorded. However, two of the five occupants in his vehicle, together with a roadside hawker, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Personnel from the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) visited the scene to begin investigations.

The damaged vehicles are yet to be cleared, resulting in heavy traffic congestion along the stretch.
