Aide to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, says he has no objection to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigating a petition against him or conducting an audit, but insists he is unhappy with how he was treated during the process.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Aboagye questioned the circumstances surrounding his arrest at the Kotoka International Airport, stating that neither he nor his lawyers had received any invitation from EOCO before his arrival in Ghana.
“I have no problem with EOCO investigating a petition or conducting an audit. My problem is how they treated me. I even parked my car at the airport because I knew I would be returning soon. When I arrived, I was told my name was on a stop list, yet neither I nor my lawyers had received any invitation from EOCO,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye also disputed claims that he was being investigated over the alleged misappropriation of GH¢55 million, describing the figure as “a propaganda spin.”
According to him, he was initially informed that investigations concerned an amount of GH¢2.5 million, making the later GH¢55 million allegation inconsistent.
“The facts are there. I was told I was being investigated for GH¢2.5 million, so where from the GH¢55 million? It’s a propaganda spin. Throughout the entire period, the total amount involved in the organisation was GH¢33 million, so GH¢55 million is a non-starter,” he argued.
He further revealed that he spent two days in custody without access to his legal team.
“I saw my lawyers on Monday afternoon. From Saturday to Sunday, I was in the same clothes,” he stated.
Mr. Aboagye also maintained that the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), where he served as Executive Secretary, did not receive government funding after the COVID-19 period.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye was arrested by EOCO officials at the Accra International Airport on July 12, 2026, and was later granted bail. He was released from custody on July 14 after meeting his GH¢50 million bail conditions.
EOCO says the arrest forms part of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of about GH¢55 million during Mr. Aboagye’s tenure as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation.
