Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after being formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The Ghana international appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5, in connection with alleged incidents that occurred between 2021 and 2022 during his time at Arsenal.
The charges come just days after Partey officially left the Premier League club upon the expiration of his contract.
The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in February 2022 after receiving an initial report of rape.
Partey, through his lawyer Jenny Wiltshire, has denied all allegations. Wiltshire previously stated that the midfielder “denies all the charges against him” and “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
The case has now been referred to the Central Criminal Court (commonly known as the Old Bailey), where Partey is expected to make his next appearance on September 2.
Meanwhile, reports from Spain suggest the 31-year-old is close to finalising a move to La Liga side Villarreal following his Arsenal exit.
