Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has called on new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz to widen his player selection pool as he begins preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, the experienced Portuguese tactician, was recently appointed on a short-term deal as Ghana’s head coach, replacing Otto Addo. The former Real Madrid, Iran and Egypt boss is expected to be in charge for an initial four-month period, with an option for extension.
While welcoming the appointment, Norgbey urged the 73-year-old to consider Ghanaian players abroad who could strengthen the national team.
He stressed that selection should not be limited to the current squad, but should also include players performing outside the country who are eligible and willing to represent Ghana.
“He [Carlos Queiroz] should also cast his net wider to embrace Ghanaian nationals who are plying their trade elsewhere, who are willing and capable to play for the national team,” Norgbey said.
“He shouldn’t limit himself to the team, the players that have been handed over to him, but he should look elsewhere and see which player will fit into the team and fit into his philosophy,” the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman added.
Queiroz is expected to officially begin work with the squad next month, with Ghana lined up for an international friendly against Mexico, followed by a final preparatory match against Wales on June 2.
The Black Stars will feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the fifth time, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Ghana will be seeking a stronger showing after group-stage exits in both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.
