Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has put the entire Ministry and its agencies on notice: every staff member, from the Minister himself to junior officers, must register for the government’s One Million Coders Programme by September 11.
The directive, announced at the National Girls in ICT Day celebration on Monday, September 7, makes digital skills training a requirement for staff across the Ministry and its agencies.
Mr George said all staff must provide evidence of registration to the Chief Director by the close of the week, with participants expected to complete at least one course and obtain a certificate by the end of 2026.
Importantly, the directive does not exempt senior officials, with the Minister indicating that the requirement applies to the leadership of the Ministry as well.
“I’ve just told the Chief Director that I want a memo to go out to all agencies under the ministry and the ministry itself.
“By the close of the week, all staff of every agency under this ministry and in the ministry, from the Minister and the Deputy Minister and Chief Director to Directors, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors and then all the various big portfolios you have in your agencies. You have until the end of this week to show evidence,” he said.
The move forms part of efforts to equip public sector workers with digital skills as Ghana accelerates its digital transformation and expands its digital economy.
The One Million Coders Programme is intended to build digital capabilities among Ghanaians, while the Ministry’s latest directive seeks to ensure that those responsible for driving the country’s digital agenda are also part of the skills-development push.
