Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has apologised to Ghanaian supporters following his side’s 4-2 defeat by The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead to suffer their second consecutive defeat in Group C, leaving their qualification hopes in serious doubt.
The Black Stars appeared to be in control after taking an early 2-0 lead, but The Gambia produced a stunning comeback to turn the game around and claim all three points.
The defeat leaves Ghana bottom of Group C without a point after two matches, having also lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in their opening fixture in Bouake last Thursday.
Queiroz was visibly disappointed after the match and apologised to the supporters who witnessed another damaging defeat on home soil.
“Myself, the staff, all the players, we are deeply sad, deeply sad with the result that happened here today. And we have to say sorry to our fans, to our supporters,” Queiroz said.
Ghana had been hoping to secure their first win under the Portuguese coach after taking control of the match against The Gambia, but the visitors responded strongly to complete a remarkable turnaround.
The result puts further pressure on the Black Stars as they attempt to revive their qualification campaign and secure a place at the 2027 tournament.
Ghana missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after failing to qualify for the competition, ending their long-standing run of appearances at the continental showpiece.
The Black Stars will return to action in October when they face Somalia in a double-header at the Accra Sports Stadium as they look to get their campaign back on track.
