The Premier League is back, and Matchday 1 wastes little time delivering major storylines. Arsenal begin their title defence at home to newly promoted Coventry City on Friday night, while Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham all face intriguing tests in the opening weekend.
Arsenal enter the campaign with confidence after a statement 3-0 victory over Manchester City in last weekend’s Community Shield in Cardiff. The result offered an early glimpse of the Gunners’ ambition, and Martin Odegaard believes they have already sent a message to their rivals.
“We played some brilliant football. Great performance and a great way to start the season,” said the Arsenal captain. “We showed our level today. We’ve shown we’re ready. We’re serious, and we want to do it again.”
Arsenal will now look to turn that early promise into a successful title defence when Coventry visit the Emirates.
For City, meanwhile, the challenge is to respond. Manchester United also start on Saturday, travelling to promoted Hull City. The Red Devils will be hoping for a stronger campaign under Michael Carrick, with renewed attention on Marcus Rashford following his return to the squad. Harry Maguire believes keeping the forward could prove crucial.
“As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us for sure,” Maguire said. “You saw when he came on, he threatened the backline really well. He could have scored. He’s a huge threat.”
Liverpool begin life under new manager Andoni Iraola with arguably the weekend’s biggest fixture, travelling to Newcastle on Sunday evening. Newcastle have also undergone a major transformation under new boss Matthias Jaissle, who is embracing the challenge of taking the club forward.

That clash promises to be one of the defining fixtures of the opening weekend, with both clubs attempting to establish new identities.
Elsewhere, Tottenham begin the Roberto De Zerbi era away at Brentford, while Chelsea travel to Fulham for a London derby under new boss Xabi Alonso. Everton host Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest welcome Leeds in two other intriguing Saturday encounters.
Promoted Ipswich Town face Sunderland in another meeting between newly elevated sides, while Brighton host Aston Villa on Sunday.
