The Ghana Police Service has identified and interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng in connection with the death of 23-year-old law student Ivan Baidoo on the Tema Motorway.
The action follows preliminary investigations that began after a video related to the incident circulated widely on social media.
Ivan, a second-year law student, died after an accident involving a YANGO-operated motorbike on the Tema Motorway on Thursday, 27 August 2026, around 4 p.m., according to a petition submitted by his family to the Police.
The petition stated that Ivan ordered a YANGO ride and boarded a motorbike with registration number M 26-AB 384 travelling from Old Ashongman to East Legon.
The rider, Samuel Arthur Wesley, reportedly told investigators at the Airport Police Station that a member of a police patrol team, also on a motorbike, pursued him from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway. He alleged that the officer caught up with them and struck their motorbike from behind, causing both him and Ivan to fall.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 12 September, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that General Corporal Koranteng had been identified as connected to the incident and had been removed from active duty pending the outcome of investigations.
The Police said the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is intensifying efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding Ivan Baidoo’s death. The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) has also been assigned to examine the conduct of General Corporal Koranteng in relation to the incident.
Both investigations are expected to determine the events that led to Ivan’s death and whether the officer’s actions aligned with the professional standards and regulations of the Ghana Police Service.
