A lecturer at Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga, Upper East Region, has allegedly been beaten to death by military personnel operating in the Bawku area.
In a statement released on Saturday, 12 September, management of the college announced the death of Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department. According to the college, Mr Abdulai died following an alleged assault by military personnel on the night of Friday, 11 September.
The college provided no further details on the events leading to the alleged assault or the circumstances of his death.
Citi News sources indicate that Mr Abdulai was allegedly arrested while riding a motorbike during curfew hours.
News of the incident sparked protests in Pusiga on Saturday morning. Residents blocked roads and set tyres ablaze to express their anger over the lecturer’s death and the conduct of military personnel in the community.
The incident has heightened concerns among locals about the treatment of civilians during ongoing security operations in the area.
Management of Gbewaa College of Education has expressed deep concern over the death of its staff member. No official details have yet emerged regarding any investigation into the alleged assault.
