The Ghana Police Service has destroyed approximately 400 acres of suspected cannabis farms during a major intelligence-led operation in the Peki enclave in the Volta Region.

The joint operation, which targeted illicit narcotics activities, was led by the Volta Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Mick Omari Boakye, with support from senior officers from the Regional Police Command, the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), Highways Patrol Unit and personnel from the DLEU/CID Headquarters.

According to the Police, about 80 officers participated in the operation, which was carried out at Dzrake, a suburb of Peki.

The team reportedly trekked approximately 15 miles through dense bushland and farming areas before identifying several plots of land covering an estimated 400 acres under suspected cannabis cultivation.

The Police said the suspects tending the farms fled into the bush upon spotting the approaching officers, abandoning the cultivation sites before they could be arrested.

All the identified cannabis farms were subsequently seized, destroyed and set ablaze.

The operation was successfully concluded at about 11:00 a.m.

Following the exercise, the Regional Crime Officer commended the personnel for their dedication, bravery and resilience throughout the operation, which involved trekking through difficult terrain to dismantle the suspected illegal cannabis farms.

The Police say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat the cultivation and trafficking of illicit drugs and strengthen the fight against narcotics-related crimes across the country.
