The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed down Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Schools in the Yendi Municipality following a violent incident involving armed men who stormed the school premises.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 9, 2026, after a disagreement between some community members and school authorities over an attempt to construct a commercial shed on the school compound.
According to preliminary findings by the GES, the disagreement escalated, leading some of the community members to fire multiple warning shots into the air.
The Headmaster of Zohe E.P. Junior High School, Mohammed Shani Gazali, was also assaulted during the incident and later sought medical attention at a hospital. He was treated and discharged.
Although no casualties were recorded, the incident reportedly created panic among students and staff, disrupted academic activities and led to the vandalisation of some school property.
The matter has since been reported to the police, with security authorities engaging relevant stakeholders to address the situation.
In the interest of the safety of learners and staff, the GES has directed that the school remains closed temporarily. The Service said the school is expected to reopen on Monday, July 13, 2026, if clearance is received from security agencies.
The GES has condemned the attack, warning that acts of violence, vandalism or any behaviour that threatens the safety of members of the school community will not be tolerated.
Management has assured parents, guardians, staff and the public that the safety and security of students and teachers remain its top priority.
