The government, through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has begun distributing relief items to victims affected by the recent floods in the Volta Region.

At a brief ceremony in Ho, the Volta Regional Directorate of NADMO handed over the items to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, as well as Municipal and District NADMO Directors, for onward distribution to affected communities.

The relief package includes more than 2,000 mattresses, bags of rice, cooking oil, blankets, plastic buckets, and other essential household items.

The Volta Regional NADMO Director, Paschal Agbagba, said the items were supplied by the National NADMO with support from the government to help the over 54,000 populated families whose homes and livelihoods were affected in 12 districts in the Volta Region by the recent heavy downpour.

Presenting the items, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the government for their timely intervention.

He appealed to corporate organisations, philanthropic individuals and other stakeholders to support government’s efforts by extending assistance to the flood victims.

Mr. Gunu also directed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, together with NADMO Directors, to ensure the relief items are distributed fairly and reach only the affected victims.

Receiving the items on behalf of the MMDCEs and NADMO Directors, the Adaklu District Chief Executive and Dean of the Volta Regional MMDCEs, Jerry Yaw Ameko, assured the Regional Minister that strict monitoring measures would be put in place to guarantee a transparent distribution process.

He pledged that all MMDCEs would personally supervise the exercise to ensure every relief item reaches the intended beneficiaries.

The intervention is expected to provide immediate relief to hundreds of families as recovery efforts continue in communities affected by the recent floods.
