The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has cautioned the public against the use of converted Toyota Voxy vehicles, citing serious safety risks.
In a public advisory issued on April 13, 2026, the Authority revealed that a Technical Working Group found the vehicles—originally manufactured as right-hand drive—are being converted to left-hand drive without approved standards or regulatory oversight.
According to the NRSA, these conversions involve major structural changes to critical systems such as steering, braking, and suspension, potentially compromising safety and increasing the risk of mechanical failure.
The Authority further noted that the Toyota Voxy is designed as a family minivan and is not suitable for commercial passenger transport, particularly for long-distance travel. It also raised concerns that some privately registered vehicles are being used for commercial purposes in violation of regulations.
The NRSA has therefore advised passengers to avoid patronising such vehicles, especially for long journeys, and urged operators to comply strictly with safety requirements.
Importers have also been cautioned against bringing in right-hand drive vehicles intended for conversion.
The Authority says it is working with key stakeholders, including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and the Ghana Police Service, to implement measures aimed at improving road safety and protecting the travelling public.
