The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred former presidential aspirant and Assin Central stalwart Kennedy Ohene Agyapong to its National Disciplinary Committee over recent public comments considered harmful to party unity.

The decision was reached at a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council on Thursday, June 25, with the committee given two weeks to investigate the petitions and submit recommendations.

The move comes amid growing tensions within the opposition party as it works to rebuild and reposition itself after losing the 2024 general election.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, the NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, confirmed that all petitions filed against Mr Agyapong had been forwarded to the disciplinary committee.

“The decision was that all of these petitions must be referred to the National Disciplinary Committee,” he said.

“Let’s manage for the next two weeks, and when we receive the report and a decision is made, it will be communicated appropriately,” he added.

The petitions follow a series of public remarks by Mr Agyapong in which he criticised some decisions taken by the NPP while in government.

Among the issues that sparked controversy were his comments on the failure of the Akufo-Addo administration to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region despite significant investments.

Mr Agyapong also stirred debate after warning that he could “spill the beans” on alleged wrongdoing within the party if attempts were made to silence him.

His remarks have divided opinion within the NPP, with some members arguing that they undermine efforts to strengthen internal unity and restore public trust, while others insist they amount to constructive criticism.

Party insiders say the leadership is worried that such public exchanges could derail its post-election rebuilding efforts, which include restructuring its internal systems, reconnecting with grassroots supporters and preparing for future elections.

The disciplinary committee will now determine whether Mr Agyapong’s comments breached party regulations and codes of conduct.

Mr Agyapong remains one of the NPP’s most influential figures, having placed second behind Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s 2023 presidential primaries.

Known for his outspoken style, he continues to enjoy strong support among sections of the party’s grassroots.

The committee’s findings, expected within the next fortnight, could shape not only Mr Agyapong’s political future but also the broader internal dynamics of the NPP as it seeks to maintain discipline while managing differing views within its ranks.
