Former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Sam Pyne, has raised concerns over what he describes as a lack of transparency regarding the whereabouts of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, following her reported return to Ghana to serve a prison sentence.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Pyne suggested that the government’s handling of the matter is creating room for speculation and public suspicion.

“Mark my words, the government may be planning to enter a nolle prosequi during the appeal process. I will not be surprised if she is eventually set free,” he alleged.

According to him, conflicting statements from government communicators have failed to adequately address public concerns about the whereabouts of the former MASLOC boss.

“If she has come and we don’t know her whereabouts, there are government communications officers who should be able to explain,” he said.

Mr Pyne referenced recent comments by policy analyst Franklin Cudjoe, who reportedly claimed that Sedina Tamakloe was under house arrest.

He noted that government officials denied the allegation but did not provide clarity on her actual location.

“When Franklin Cudjoe said the woman was on house arrest, a government communicator said that wasn’t true. When he was asked her whereabouts, he said he does not take care of prisoners,” Mr Pyne stated.

The former KMA Mayor argued that the absence of official information is fuelling speculation about the government’s intentions.

“The question has been posed. Let it not be that she will be hidden and not taken to prison, then later they will want to use the law to enter a nolle prosequi during the appeal,” he alleged.

“That’s what they want to do. It is giving way for speculations if they don’t want to be transparent with us,” he added.

His comments follow allegations that Sedina Tamakloe Attionu is being held in a private facility or receiving special treatment while serving her sentence.

In 2024, the Accra High Court convicted Sedina Tamakloe in absentia and sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment after finding her guilty of causing financial loss to the state and stealing during her tenure as MASLOC Chief Executive between 2013 and 2016. The court ruled that her actions resulted in a financial loss of nearly GH¢90 million.

She had previously been granted permission by the High Court in 2021 to travel abroad for medical treatment but failed to return, leading to the continuation of the trial in her absence.

Sedina Tamakloe was recently extradited from the United States and arrived at the Kotoka International Airport on June 9 aboard United Airlines flight UA996 from Washington Dulles International Airport. She was subsequently taken into custody by security personnel to begin serving her sentence.
