Tension flared outside the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday when a group of young men clashed with security personnel while demanding the expulsion of former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

The protesters, who gathered at the venue, carried banners bearing Mr. Agyapong’s image with the inscription “Ken Must Go” and chanted “Away! Away!” as they called on party leaders to take disciplinary action against him.

The situation became heated when security personnel attempted to prevent the demonstrators from getting close to the meeting grounds, resulting in a brief confrontation.

The protest comes amid growing calls from some members of the NPP for disciplinary action against Mr. Agyapong following a series of controversial remarks about the party and its leadership.

The controversy stems largely from Mr. Agyapong’s criticism of the NPP’s record in government, particularly its failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital after eight years in office.

He has also publicly warned that he could “spill the beans” about happenings within the party if he continues to be provoked by some members.

His comments have triggered mixed reactions within the party. While some members argue that his statements amount to anti-party behaviour and undermine the NPP’s image, others insist his remarks should be viewed as constructive criticism intended to encourage introspection and reform.

NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, recently stated that Mr. Agyapong’s conduct could be considered inconsistent with the party’s constitutional requirement for members to protect and promote the party’s good name, although any disciplinary action would have to follow the party’s laid-down procedures.

Adom News’ Kofi Akowuah Twum reported that the NEC meeting is expected to deliberate on a range of issues; Mr. Agyapong is likely to be referred to the disciplinary committee, as the steering committee held a meeting on the matter on Wednesday.
