Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the Ghana Police Service to take full control of security arrangements for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, warning against leaving safety in the hands of party structures or aspirants’ camps.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said security at such a critical political exercise must be handled by state institutions to ensure neutrality, order, and public confidence.
“On matters of security, I think the Ghana Police Service should take the forefront. I don’t think it should be left to the party or the presidential aspirants’ camps to provide their own security,” he said.
He noted that while political parties organise internal elections, they remain creations of law and therefore fall under the broader responsibility of the state.
“It will be better if the state apparatus does a good job, but things shouldn’t be like what happened in Ablekuma North. I think the police should lead the provision of security because it is a national exercise,” he stated.
He further warned that heightened political mobilisation across the country could create tension if not properly managed.
“We know people are mobilising across the country because there may be mayhem or threats, but if the police are in charge, there will be order and calm,” he added.
His comments come amid growing discussions about security preparedness ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries, following concerns over threats and disturbances at previous party activities.
