The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed Vice Presidential Advisor, Dr Tia Kabiru Mahama as its parliamentary candidate for the Walewale constituency.
This was a unanimous decision taken by the National Executive Committee(NEC) at a meeting on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
The decision follows the withdrawal of incumbent MP, Lariba Zuweira Abudu from the parliamentary primary contest.
A statement signed by the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua said this resulted in Dr. Tia Mahama, becoming the sole aspirant for the contest.Â
“The Party regards in high esteem, the decision of Hon. Zuweira to bow out of the race and appeals to all stakeholders of the Walewale constituency to offer their unflinching support to the candidacy of Dr. Tia Abdul–Kabiru Mahama.Â
“May God bless our homeland Ghana and make the New Patriotic Party great and strong,” the statement read.Â
Confusion marred Monday’s re-run of the parliamentary primary, prompting the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare the election null and void.
The disruption occurred when an individual snatched ballot papers during sorting, destroying some ballots.
This re-run followed a ruling by the Tamale High Court, which annulled the results of the initial primary held in January due to irregularities, including impersonation and over-voting.
The court ordered a fresh election, which was originally scheduled for September 8 but postponed to Monday.
