A man identified as Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, reportedly the son of a prophet, has been arrested in Ogun State, Nigeria, for allegedly impersonating a renowned cleric on Facebook and defrauding worshippers through fake prayers and prophecies.

Arojah was arrested after allegedly using a duplicated Facebook account belonging to Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

The case was reported to the police on October 3 by Akogun, who said several members of the public had contacted him over fraudulent activities being carried out through a Facebook profile bearing his identity.

Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Command deployed intelligence and detective operatives to identify the person behind the account.

The police said sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis led investigators to a nearby village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro-Ibogun axis, where Arojah was arrested.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating Akogun on Facebook.

According to the police, he used the cleric’s identity to deliver fake prophecies and offer prayer services to people seeking spiritual assistance.

Investigators said he specifically targeted people who visited the real prophet’s Facebook page seeking prayers and other forms of spiritual help.

After gaining their trust, he allegedly convinced the victims to send money for the supposed spiritual services.

The police said preliminary investigations had established that the alleged scheme affected victims both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, with the suspect reportedly obtaining more than N18 million (approximately GHS 160,000).

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest and said the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The investigation is expected to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify other possible victims and establish whether the suspect had accomplices.

The police said the outcome of the investigation would guide further action and possible prosecution.
