President Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 6 March 2018 unveiled the design and architecture for the National Cathedral at a ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The proposed national cathedral is a 5,000-capacity auditorium design with a grand central hall, a music school, multi-purpose spaces, an art gallery and a shop.

But since its unveiling, the initiative has suffered a setback following criticisms by opposition political parties and civil society groups who have described it as a waste of resources.

But as part of his budget statement presentation to parliament, Mr Ofori Atta assured that the building of the National Cathedral would not put undue financial burdens on the state.

Mr Ofori Atta said the Cathedral partnership framework is a practical expression of the social partnership envisaged to foster a participatory development of the country as a collective goal.

The cathedral, according to the president would be an iconic centre for Thanksgiving and for worshipping God for His mercies.
