The 80-year-old man, Edmond Nyarko, who was arrested for allegedly speaking against the creation of the Oti region has broken his silence.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Mr Nyarko said never in his life has he been involved in partisan politics and has no reason to do so now.

“I was not saying “no” to Oti. Why should I talk about Oti? I don’t have time for that. As a teacher, we were advised in 1997 that you don’t have to go into politics and that has been my guide even though I have retired about 19 years ago”

Mr Nyarko explained that he was struggling with a young boy who operates his commercial motorbike and was in the process heard saying “No” and that was taken as a campaign against the Oti Region.

“I went to get my sales from a young man who failed to come last week to render my sales to me and as a headmaster of a school, since we were vacating yesterday I wanted to go to the village. Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding that brought about a struggle during which I told him I didn’t like his behaviour. So I repeated “No” to what he was trying to tell me,” he explained.

Edmond Nyarko was arrested on Thursday after he was reportedly heard at a popular joint in Kejebi called Counter, saying that the creation of the region was unnecessary.

According to a son of the suspect, the police told them his father was arrested on the instructions of the Kejebi District Chief Executive, Maxwell Asiedu, without any charges pressed against neither him nor a statement taken from him.
