Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, says he has engaged the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to introduce live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
According to the Minister, the initiative is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance.
In a post on Facebook, Mr Ayariga said the programme is being rolled out in line with the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
“I have engaged with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to roll out a programme to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).”
The Minister explained that the live broadcasts would give citizens greater access to proceedings and discussions at the local government level.
“This initiative is aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance, in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).”
He further expressed hope that the initiative would stimulate public interest in the upcoming District-Level Elections and encourage more citizens to participate actively in the decentralisation process.
“We also hope this initiative will generate greater public interest in and participation in the upcoming District-Level Elections, while encouraging more citizens to actively engage in the decentralisation process.”
Mr Ayariga said the collaboration forms part of broader efforts to promote openness and responsiveness within Ghana’s local governance institutions.
“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions.”
