Ghana's Parliament

Minority Chief Whip of Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress has revealed less than 100 parliamentarians out of the 275 are effectively working.

According to Hon Muntaka Mubarak, there have been several instances where MPs deliberately absent themselves from parliament with a leave of absence excuse.

He narrated an encounter where an MP for more than two months absented himself from the House.

Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Hon Muntaka said the number of constituencies must be reduced to ensure efficiency.

He revealed some parliamentarians hire the services of their colleagues to sign on their behalf which is not allowed but happens.

“Some MPs can be out of the country and yet their names will be in the attendance book. You can have one MP signing for about five people yet you can’t punish anybody because nobody has been caught,” he said.

He further proposed a biometric system must be installed in Parliament to monitor when MPs check in and check out.
