The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has issued a rejoinder to correct what it describes as misleading reports circulating on social media concerning an alleged rape and extortion case involving two students.

According to the University’s management, the incident did not occur on the KNUST campus in Kumasi, but rather in the nearby community of Ayeduase. It stressed that the location places the matter outside the jurisdiction of the University’s internal security operations.

“The alleged incidents did not occur on the KNUST campus. They took place off campus in the nearby community of Ayeduase and therefore fall outside the jurisdiction of the University’s internal security operations,” the statement clarified.

The University also refuted claims linking the suspect to its security personnel, stating that he is not an employee of KNUST.

“The suspect is not a member of KNUST’s Security Services. The individual is a private security guard engaged by the Ayeduase Roman Catholic Primary School and has no affiliation whatsoever with the University’s official security system,” it added.

Management further indicated that the case has been reported to the District Police Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Oduom, Kumasi, and is currently under investigation. It confirmed that the suspect is in police custody and the matter is before court.

It also noted that support is being extended to the victims. According to the statement, the victims have received initial counselling from DOVVSU, while the University’s Counselling Centre has also reached out to provide further psychological and medical assistance.

“KNUST remains firmly committed to the safety, welfare, and well-being of its students and will continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served,” the University stated, while urging the public and media to verify information before publishing to prevent misinformation.
