Chiefs of Kenyasi No. 1 in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have appealed to Newmont Ghana to increase its development interventions in the community to improve the living conditions of residents.
The traditional leaders made the appeal during a health screening and health walk organised by Newmont Ahafo South Mine as part of activities marking the company’s 20th anniversary.
Speaking on behalf of the chiefs, the Krontihene of Kenyasi No. 1, Nana Yaw Boadu, said the company should prioritise the rehabilitation and construction of roads in the community.
He explained that the poor condition of some roads was affecting residents’ daily activities and creating health and transportation challenges.
Nana Yaw Boadu also called on Newmont to create more employment opportunities for qualified indigenes, particularly young people, to help address unemployment in the community.
He acknowledged the contribution Newmont has made to development in Kenyasi No. 1 over the past two decades but maintained that more could be done to meet the growing needs of residents.
Meanwhile, Communications and External Relations Manager of Newmont Ghana, Samuel Osei, said the wellbeing of people living in communities where the company operates remains a major priority.
He explained that the three-day free medical screening and health walk were organised for residents of the five communities within the company’s operational area.
The communities include Kenyasi No. 1, Kenyasi No. 2, Ntotroso, Gyedu and Wamahinso.
Mr Osei said the company would continue to implement initiatives aimed at improving the lives of residents and supporting development in its host communities.
He noted that Newmont’s presence over the past 20 years had contributed to development in the communities but acknowledged that there was still more work to be done.
