Real estate firm Imperial Homes Ghana Limited has announced plans to phase out single-use plastics across its offices and project sites as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and reduce plastic pollution.

The initiative was announced by the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Francis Biney, to mark this year’s World Oceans Day, observed on June 8.

According to the company, the decision was inspired by growing concerns over the impact of plastic waste on drainage systems, flooding and marine ecosystems, particularly following recent flooding incidents in Accra.

In a statement, Imperial Homes noted that plastic waste continues to clog drains, worsen flooding and eventually find its way into rivers and oceans, posing a significant threat to the environment.

As part of the initiative, which takes effect on July 1, the company will ban the use of single-use plastics at all its offices and operational sites nationwide.

To support the transition, every employee will receive a branded reusable water bottle sponsored by the company. Water dispensers will also be installed at all company locations to enable staff to refill their bottles throughout the day.

Management has further directed senior and line managers to ensure compliance with the policy and encourage their teams to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Francis Biney said the move forms part of the company’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

“This small shift cuts down on plastic waste, reduces pressure on our drainage systems and demonstrates our commitment to a cleaner environment,” he stated.

He encouraged employees to embrace the initiative and make reusable bottles part of their daily routine.

Imperial Homes, which has operated in Ghana’s real estate sector for the past 18 years, said it hopes the initiative will inspire other corporate organisations to adopt similar measures in the fight against plastic pollution.

The company, whose leadership includes Director Nana Ansah Kwao, believes collective action by businesses and individuals is essential to protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future.

The announcement comes at a time when environmental advocates are intensifying calls for stronger measures to tackle plastic waste, which has been identified as a major contributor to urban flooding and marine pollution in Ghana.
