The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a GH¢200 cash reward for members of the public who provide credible video evidence of individuals dumping refuse into drains and waterways during rainfall.
The initiative, unveiled by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, forms part of efforts to curb flooding in the capital by tackling one of its major causes, indiscriminate waste disposal.
Under the scheme, the reward will be paid for each offender captured on video and successfully identified. This means individuals who submit evidence involving multiple offenders could receive substantial amounts in rewards.
For instance, a person who provides usable evidence leading to the identification of five offenders could earn as much as GH¢1,000.
Mr. Allotey urged residents to submit complete and clear video footage that can support enforcement actions.
“If you have complete evidence, bring it. People have already come with evidence,” he stated, indicating that the Assembly already has some cases on file and is prepared to act on credible reports.
According to the Mayor, the successful prosecution of offenders depends largely on the quality of evidence provided by the public.
He explained that authorities require clear and conclusive footage showing individuals in the act of dumping waste into drains or water bodies before legal action can be taken.
The announcement comes as Accra continues to grapple with recurrent flooding, with choked drains filled with plastic waste, refuse and debris frequently cited as a major factor worsening the effects of heavy rainfall.
The AMA believes the reward system will encourage public participation in enforcing sanitation regulations and help deter individuals who contribute to the blockage of drains and waterways across the city.
