Inusah Fuseini, former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources

Ranking member, Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Mr Inusah Fuseini says the government should rethink its decision to use the Atiwa forest for bauxite mining because that area is targeted for exploitation.

According to Mr
Fuseini, the Atiwa forest cannot be compensated for anything because it has
lots of importance.

“Atiwa has been
declared by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation as
globally significant by diversify area and gives government money to maintain
the lands. I remember that even when I was the Lands Minister the Russians were
prospecting the land, I stopped them,” he stated.

He further stated on Joy News AM show that the Atiwa lands when affected will affect the whole country because it serves as a water attachment area for three important water bodies in Ghana.

“According to natural
resource accounting when we degrade the environment the consequence
result to monetary values if you do the natural resource accounting
you will realise that nothing compensate for Atiwa.

“If you give Atiwa
out you’ve destroyed all the water bodies, exotic species, ecological balance
which will affect the ecological balance of the country. I think the government
should have a rethink on this matter,” he stated.
