Gomoa Central MP Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, says he has come under intense pressure over the past two days following the violent clashes at New Winneba, which left several people dead and others injured.
Speaking during a joint Facebook address with Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, A-Plus said the pressure had largely resulted from mounting expectations on political leaders to intervene in the situation and help address concerns about justice and the longstanding tensions between the two communities.
“I have gone through a lot these past two days. It is all part of it. There came a time when the pressure was intense because the things people are supposed to be doing, they aren’t doing,” he said.
According to him, leaders must be willing to take the initiative to resolve pressing challenges, particularly when residents feel that the justice they deserve is not being served.
A-Plus said his position as a political leader comes with the responsibility of being available to people who depend on him for support during difficult times.
“I have become one person I have to be there for a lot of people, so there is a lot of pressure,” he said.
He stressed that, given their positions as political leaders in the area, he and Afenyo-Markin must work together to ease the longstanding tensions between the communities and help find a lasting solution to the conflict.
