An inspected by the Greater Accra Regional Fire Command has revealed that only five of about 30 fire hydrants in the Ministries enclave at Accra are fully functional.
The exercise was carried out by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to assess firefighting preparedness in the area.
The team found five hydrants with strong water pressure, two showed low pressure, and the remaining 23 were non-functional.
Regional Fire Officer ACFO II Rashid Nisawu advised management of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to work with GNFS and GWL to get a hydrant installed after the team discovered the department did have one on its premises at all.
The inspection covered several government institutions in the enclave, including the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) as well as the Ministries of Transport, Roads and Highways, Energy and Finance.
Other institutions inspected were the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the National Lottery Authority (NLA), the Court Complex and the Accra Sports Stadium.
GNFS says the exercise is part of a proactive push to identify, repair and restore non-functional hydrants ahead of the fire season, to improve emergency response and protect lives and property.
