Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says he remains optimistic and in good spirits after the High Court set July 3, 2026, to deliver judgment in the high-profile illegal mining case involving him and two others.
The case, which relates to alleged illegal mining activities at a concession in Samreboi in the Western Region, has been ongoing for months and has attracted significant public and political attention.
The court fixed the judgment date on Wednesday, June 3, after the defence closed its case following the testimony of its fifth and final witness. With both prosecution and defence having concluded their arguments, the matter is now set for final determination.
Reacting after the court’s decision, Chairman Wontumi expressed confidence in the judicial process, saying he remains unshaken as the case moves toward judgment.
“I feel good and happy,” he said shortly after proceedings, signalling optimism ahead of the final ruling.
His lawyer, Tetteh Thompson, also maintained that the defence team had presented a strong case and expressed confidence in the outcome.
“On our part, we have done what is necessary, and we are very convinced that the system will work and the court will do the needful,” he said.
The prosecution and defence are expected to file their written addresses by June 17, 2026, ahead of the final judgment.
The ruling on July 3 is expected to bring closure to a case that has featured testimony from several high-profile witnesses, including former Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah.
