A tragic incident has left residents of the Tatale-Sanguli District in the Northern Region in shock after a District Roads Engineer died following an attack by a swarm of bees while supervising a road improvement project.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 1, during ongoing works on the Tatale-Sanguli road under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).
Accra-based Channel One TV reported that workers were engaged in construction activities when a swarm of bees suddenly emerged and attacked the team, forcing workers to flee the area in search of safety.
However, the District Roads Engineer was reportedly unable to escape in time and was overwhelmed by the bees. Witnesses said he sustained multiple stings as the insects covered much of his body before collapsing.
Personnel from the National Ambulance Service were called to the scene and rushed him to the Tatale Hospital for emergency medical attention. He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival.
The Tatale-Sanguli District DRIP Coordinator, Jonas Wajah, who confirmed the incident to Channel One News, said the engineer was alone at the point where the bees attacked.
The Officer in Charge of the National Ambulance Service in the district also confirmed the incident, noting that despite efforts by health professionals, the victim could not be revived.
The body has since been deposited at the Yendi Municipal Hospital mortuary pending further investigations and burial arrangements.
The incident has left colleagues, family members and residents of the district in mourning, as the engineer was carrying out his official duties at the time of the attack.
