Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, says the constituency is well-positioned to become one of Ghana’s leading tourism destinations due to its rich natural and historical attractions.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MP expressed confidence in the district’s tourism potential, despite concerns that her views may be seen as partisan because she represents the area in Parliament.
“People will think I am promoting Ahanta West because I am the MP, but the truth is, in the whole of the Western Region, when we talk of tourism, maybe what I am seeing others are not, but I can see Ahanta West becoming a tourism hub in Ghana,” she said.
According to her, the district boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, many of which remain largely undiscovered by both local and international tourists.
“When I take you to one beach, you will think you are in the Caribbean,” she remarked, highlighting the area’s scenic coastline.
She also pointed to the district’s unique geography, where some rivers flow directly into the sea, creating picturesque landscapes that could attract visitors seeking nature and eco-tourism experiences.
Beyond its natural beauty, the MP noted that Ahanta West is rich in historical heritage, particularly sites linked to the transatlantic slave trade.
“We have very beautiful beaches and we have about four castles and forts, so that should tell you that the slave trade really went on,” she said.
Ms. Bissue expressed optimism that with the right investment and promotion, the district could emerge as a major tourism destination, contributing significantly to local economic development and job creation.
“I am hoping that one day it will become a tourism hub because we have a lot of things we want the rest of Ghanaians to know,” she added.
Her comments come amid ongoing discussions on leveraging Ghana’s tourism assets to drive economic growth and diversify sources of national revenue.
