Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has questioned the government’s decision to provide the Rent Control Department with only two vehicles while other state institutions have been allocated more than 100 vehicles.
According to him, the limited logistics are hampering the department’s ability to effectively carry out its mandate of regulating Ghana’s rental sector.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Opoku questioned the rationale behind what he described as misplaced priorities in the allocation of state resources.
“How do you run Rent Control with two vehicles while we give other state agencies over 100 vehicles? Why do we set our priorities wrong?” he fumed.
The Rent Commissioner said he raised concerns about the situation when he first assumed office and is now calling on the Finance Minister and other relevant institutions to take note of the department’s challenges.
He argued that the Rent Control Department must be treated as a critical state institution and adequately resourced to enable it to perform its functions effectively.
Mr Opoku questioned why an institution dealing directly with one of the most basic needs of citizens, access to accommodation, continues to face logistical constraints.
“They can’t tell me they see Rent Control as an institution and not resource them. Why are we not interested in where people will sleep?” he asked.
Mr Opoku is therefore urging the Finance Ministry and other relevant state institutions to reconsider the resources available to Rent Control, particularly its vehicle capacity, to enable the department to effectively operate across the country.
