The government has trained 20,171 caterers and head cooks under the Ghana School Feeding Programme in practical nutrition standards as part of efforts to improve the quality of meals served to schoolchildren.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, disclosed this during the Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 16.
She said the training is intended to help caterers meet required nutritional standards while improving the quality and preparation of meals provided under the programme.
Ms Lartey also announced a significant expansion in the monitoring of schools participating in the School Feeding Programme.
According to her, the number of schools subjected to compliance monitoring increased from 4,419 in 2025 to 8,270 in 2026, giving authorities greater oversight of meal preparation and service.
The Minister further highlighted increased government investment in the programme, noting that funding rose from GH¢1.393 billion in 2024 to GH¢1.788 billion in 2025.
The allocation has increased again to GH¢1.982 billion for 2026, while the feeding grant remains at GH¢2 per meal, with more than 4.5 million pupils benefiting from the programme each day.
“Alongside that funding growth, we have cleared all caterer arrears from 2024 and paid the first and second terms of the 2025/2026 academic year,” she added.
