Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced plans by government to recruit 500 unemployed agriculture graduates under the Food Brigade initiative as part of efforts to boost food production across the country.

According to the Minister, preparations are underway for the recruitment exercise, which forms part of the broader Feed Ghana Programme.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Opoku explained that the graduates would provide technical support to households, schools and farmers engaged in food production.

“This week we’re making preparations to employ 500 unemployed agriculture graduates onto Food Brigade,” he said.

He noted that the officers would assist households interested in establishing home gardens and provide guidance on best agricultural practices.

“Where if you are a household and you need help with your home garden, they will help,” he stated.

The Minister disclosed that government has already distributed poultry to some households and expects the Food Brigade officers to support beneficiaries to ensure the success of the initiative.

He added that schools with farms would also benefit from the expertise of the recruited graduates.

“Schools also who need support with their farms as well,” he noted.

Mr. Opoku said the initiative forms part of the Feed Ghana Programme, which seeks to increase food production and strengthen food security nationwide.

He further revealed that religious organisations have also been incorporated into the programme.

According to him, government provided agricultural inputs to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana last year to support farming activities.

“Our country’s strength is in farming,” the Minister stressed.

He also disclosed that about 70,000 farmers have so far been enrolled under the cooperative farming component of the programme.

“The Feed Ghana Programme is alive and kicking,” Mr. Opoku added.
