Interior Minister Designate Ambrose Dery has said that people who deserve to be prosecuted for wrongdoing and vigilantism will be prosecuted.

According to him, people who take part in such acts should be held responsible for their actions and not be given any support regardless of their political background.

Commenting on the issue of vigilante groups in the country on day two of the vetting process on Saturday January 21, Mr Dery reiterated the need to de-link crime from political colours, stressing that people should be held accountable for their actions and dealt with as individuals.

“I am convinced that those who are responsible for these acts, are doing so in their own interest and not for any political party. They need not to be supported. Let us de-link offences from partisan politics” he said.

He said political parties’ leaders must be responsible and not give any indication that they endorse wrong behavior, adding that all wrongdoing must be condemned and not countenanced.

Mr Ambrose Dery indicated that Article 41 gives citizens the mandate to protect public property so things must be put into context.

He maintained that it’s important for people to act within the remit of the law and report crimes to the police.
