President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for Sentuo Airport Garden City, a proposed US$1.3 billion mixed-use development near the Accra International Airport.
The project comprises about 582 premium apartments, a 500-room hotel, a conference facility for 2,500 people, healthcare facilities, a shopping mall, gardens, 503 parking bays in a four-storey apartment building, and supporting commercial and leisure amenities.
Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, President Mahama said the project formed part of efforts to position Accra as one of Africa’s leading cities for business, tourism and quality urban living.
“Our message to the world is clear: Ghana is open for investment. Ghana is ready for partnership. Ghana is building for the future,” he said.
He commended Sentuo Group and its Executive Chairman, Mr Xu Ningquan, for bringing the project forward. He urged the developers to deliver the project as proposed and to involve Ghanaian partners.
“The scale of the proposal carries a responsibility to deliver well, work with Ghanaian partners and build facilities that serve their users and the surrounding community for many years.”
“The opportunity reaches across our economy. Construction can create work for engineers, artisans and technicians. Hospitality can support chefs, housekeepers, suppliers and transport operators. Conferences can bring business to event organisers, creative professionals, restaurants and local enterprises. These are the connections that must guide how we plan and deliver investment,” the president said.
Linking the project to his government’s “Reset” agenda and its 24-Hour Economy ambition, Mahama said sectors such as aviation, hospitality and events could sustain activity across different working hours if backed by dependable services and professional management.
He also renewed an appeal to Ghanaians in the diaspora and international investors to invest in the country’s property and tourism sectors.
“A successful tourism economy gives people reasons to stay longer, explore more widely and participate in the life of the country. Property investment can support that ambition through well-managed accommodation, homes and businesses that remain active throughout the year.
“That is the property-owning tourism economy we should aspire to build: one in which hospitality, responsible property investment and local enterprise reinforce each other. Ghanaians at home, our diaspora and international investors all have a part to play. We welcome participation in accordance with Ghana’s laws, with clear rights, transparent transactions and respect for the communities in which development takes place.”
The Sentuo Airport Garden City sod-cutting ceremony comes weeks after the president launched a seven-storey development comprising 2,030 parking bays, two hotels and commercial facilities at the airport. The project is being financed through the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s own balance sheet.
Mahama said government would measure progress on such projects by the jobs created, Ghanaian contracts awarded, skills developed and facilities brought into use.
“Ghana is open. Accra is rising. Let us build that future together,” he said.
