The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly in the Oti Region has commissioned a newly completed three-unit classroom block with a Kindergarten (KG) facility and a teachers’ bungalow at Nkpaya, a farming community, in a renewed push to improve education standards in rural areas.
For years, pupils and teachers in Nkpaya have grappled with inadequate classroom infrastructure, a situation that affected teaching and learning and placed limits on academic progress.
The new facilities are expected to change that narrative by providing a more conducive environment for lessons, strengthening school attendance, and improving access to quality education for children within Nkpaya and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, Joseph Awal Anti, reaffirmed the commitment of government and the Assembly to ensure that school children in rural communities benefit from decent educational infrastructure.
He noted that the project should be seen not merely as a set of buildings, but as a strategic investment aimed at raising the overall standard of education in the municipality.
According to the MCE, the combination of classrooms and teacher accommodation is critical to creating a stable learning environment.
He stressed that providing a place for teachers to live supports staff retention and punctuality, while improved classrooms help learners thrive.
He also urged community members to take ownership of the facility and protect it, emphasizing that proper maintenance would extend its lifespan and ensure it continues to serve future generations.
Speaking on behalf of the education directorate, Christian Ogudi, commended the Assembly for prioritizing school improvement and described the new infrastructure as timely and impactful.
He said the facility will not only serve Nkpaya but will also create opportunities for school-going children across nearby farming communities who have long faced challenges accessing suitable learning spaces.
He encouraged parents and pupils to take full advantage of the improved conditions and work toward better academic outcomes.
Community members, expressing gratitude and relief, said the commissioning marked a major turning point after years of struggling to secure such facilities for their children.
They thanked the government, the Municipal Assembly, and the Member of Parliament for responding to their needs.
The community further pledged to help maintain the facility and support teachers and pupils to ensure quality education is sustained.
In a show of support, the Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South, Geoffrey Kini, highlighted ongoing achievements in the education sector and assured residents of continued advocacy for more social infrastructure to strengthen learning in the constituency.
He noted that commissioning of classroom infrastructure at Nkpaya underscores a broader effort to bridge the infrastructure gap in rural education and create conditions where every child can learn in a safe, supportive, and well-resourced environment.
