Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, has revealed that Ghana and The Gambia are continuing discussions aimed at securing justice for the 50 Ghanaians killed during the regime of former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh.

The issue featured prominently during a meeting between Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister and the Gambian Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie.

According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, both Ghana and The Gambia have agreed to sustain cooperation on the longstanding matter, following findings by the Gambian Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) into the killings.

The massacre of 50 Ghanaians, most of whom were believed to be migrants travelling through The Gambia in 2005, remains one of the most painful incidents in Ghana–Gambia relations.

Ablakwa noted that the Gambian government expressed gratitude to Ghana and its troops for their role in supporting democratic stability in the country following the political transition from Yahya Jammeh to President Adama Barrow.

Beyond the justice discussions, both sides also explored strengthening bilateral cooperation in education, health, defence, and support for The Gambia’s planned foreign policy college.
