Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini has attributed the persistent difficulties in the preparation of national athletes to inadequate funding, following recent concerns raised over the team’s arrangements ahead of international competitions.

In a statement issued on May 3, Ghana Athletics acknowledged the issues highlighted by athletes and admitted shortcomings in the organisation of logistics for the team’s participation in Botswana.

The clarification comes in the wake of criticism from a member of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, who raised concerns about long travel schedules and poor planning, saying it negatively affected the team’s readiness.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Fuseini stressed that the federation’s inability to properly camp athletes before competitions is largely financial, noting that improved funding would significantly enhance preparation.

“Our athletes’ preparations have always been an issue. It’s a matter of funding,” he said.

“If we have the financial muscle to camp our athletes for even one week before competitions, it’ll be very helpful,” he added.

Fuseini also indicated that the athletes were informed of their flight arrangements in advance and had not raised objections at the time.

“The athletes were aware of the tickets booked for them, and I didn’t see any complaints from them.”

Despite the logistical challenges, Team Ghana still managed to secure qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

Attention now shifts to the African Senior Athletics Championships, which will be staged in Ghana at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium from May 12 to 17, 2026.
