The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) has officially commenced a four-day Operational Field Visit (OFV) to Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region.
The exercise is designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and field-based operational studies, giving students firsthand experience of internal security operations and civil-military coordination within a complex environment.
The visit, scheduled from today to Wednesday, March 11, 2026, involves students of Senior Staff Course 47 (CSE 47).
The primary objective is to develop senior and mid-level officers who are capable of analysing multifaceted security challenges and providing sound military advice at both operational and strategic levels.
Nkwanta South was selected for the study due to recurring security challenges, including communal tensions, chieftaincy disputes and land ownership conflicts.
These issues, compounded by socio-economic grievances, have necessitated the continued deployment of the Ghana Armed Forces to support civil authorities in restoring and maintaining peace.

Speaking at the event, Colonel Raymond Quartey, the Chief Instructor of the Alpha Division, Army Faculty at GAFCSC and leader of the delegation, explained that the exercise is being conducted under the theme: “Strengthening Military Aid to Civil Authority/Internal Security Operations in the Oti Region:
Enhancing Readiness, Coordination, and Responsiveness for National Development.”
According to Colonel Quartey, the field visit will allow participants to examine the specific drivers of conflict in the Nkwanta area while assessing the effectiveness of current Ghana Army deployments.
The students will analyze command and control arrangements among various security agencies and evaluate civil-military relations.
By applying the tactical estimate process to real-world scenarios, the participants aim to develop feasible recommendations to enhance operational effectiveness and conflict management in the region.
The Colonel expressed strong confidence that the objectives of the visit would be met, ultimately contributing to the military’s readiness to support national development goals.
Welcoming the delegation, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, expressed his gratitude to the GAFCSC leadership for choosing the municipality for this academic and operational exercise.
He noted that the presence of the college would likely result in enhanced security intelligence and contribute significantly to lasting peace, which is essential for businesses to thrive.
The MCE assured the delegation of the Assembly’s full cooperation and support throughout their stay, emphasizing the importance of this collaboration for both academic achievement and the long-term stability of the Nkwanta South Municipality.
