The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over its statement explaining the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing it as a disgrace to the institution and one that “defies every logic.”
Mr. Kodua’s comments follow the arrest of the former spokesperson for the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign Team. In a statement issued after the arrest, EOCO said Mr. Aboagye had been cooperating with investigators for the past few months and was aware that he was under investigation over alleged financial mismanagement involving GH¢55 million.
Reacting to the development, Mr. Kodua rejected EOCO’s explanation, arguing that the case cited by the agency had no connection to Mr. Aboagye.
According to him, the individual reported to have been implicated in the alleged financial irregularities at the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Decentralisation was the committee’s Finance Director, who is said to have begun repaying part of the alleged GH¢55 million.
He maintained that Dennis Miracles Aboagye should not have been subjected to arrest over a matter in which he was not directly implicated.
The NPP General Secretary further described EOCO’s public explanation as inconsistent and damaging to the credibility of the investigative body.
Meanwhile, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, alleged that the arrest formed part of what he described as a series of attempts by the government to divert public attention from the backlash over claims that some government officials were pursuing a third-term agenda through private citizens.
